Our page ASM Clermont Auvergne is dedicated to the yellow and blue club from Clermont-Ferrand, featuring its official ball in the Jaunards' colours, signed Gilbert. It traces the history of the Montferrand sports association, founded in 1911 by Marcel Michelin, the passion of the Marcel-Michelin stadium, and gives our tips for choosing and caring for a rugby ball.

The yellow and blue of Clermont-Ferrand.

From the club of lost finals to the Brennus in 2010

The ASM was created on 11 October 1911 under the name of Association sportive Michelin, at the initiative of Marcel Michelin, son of André Michelin, co-founder of the tyre company, who also provided the club with its stadium. For decades, Clermont collected lost championship finals, to the point of making it part of its legend. The first Brennus Shield finally arrived in 2010, during the club's eleventh final, just before its centenary. A second title followed in 2017, after a final win against RC Toulon.

Marcel-Michelin, the yellow and blue fortress

Opened in 1911, the Marcel-Michelin stadium is located in the city centre and accommodates nearly nineteen thousand spectators. Clermont has boasted a long series of home victories between 2009 and 2014, which has become famous in the championship. Its supporters, the Yellow Army, fill the stands with yellow on match nights and follow the team in numbers during major European fixtures, to the point of turning several finals into yellow waves. The stadium has been enlarged several times to accommodate an ever-increasing crowd.

Which Gilbert ball to choose and how to maintain it

The rugby ball in the colours of ASM is made by Gilbert, a manufacturer established in 1823 in the English town of Rugby, close to the famous school. In size 5, the official size for adults, a ball weighs between 410 and 460 grams, as stipulated by World Rugby's regulations. For a child, a size 4 is preferred for those aged ten to fourteen, and a size 3 before the age of nine. To maintain its shape, it should be inflated to the pressure indicated near the valve, cleaned with warm water after use, and stored away from heat.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the people of Clermont called the Jaunards?

Because of the dominant colour of their jersey, yellow with blue touches, worn since the club's beginnings. The nickname refers to both the players and supporters of the ASM.

Has Clermont played in a Champions Cup final?

Yes, in 2013 and 2015 against RC Toulon, and in 2017 against Saracens, without managing to win. However, the club did win the European Challenge in 1999, 2007 and 2019.

What pressure should a rugby ball have?

The regulations of World Rugby set a pressure between 65.7 and 68.7 kilopascals, which is about 0.66 to 0.69 bar. A ball that is overinflated bounces badly and becomes harder to catch.

Can a ball in the club's colours be used for play?

Yes, a size 5 supporter ball handles like a training ball and is suitable for passing games. For an official match, clubs use a competition ball, which has a more gripping surface.

What does the acronym ASM stand for?

Association sportive montferrandaise, referring to Montferrand, the former town that merged with Clermont to form Clermont-Ferrand. The club was founded in 1911 under the name of Association sportive Michelin.
