Two divisions, thirty professional clubs

French professional rugby is based on two divisions managed by the National Rugby League: the Top 14, which brings together fourteen clubs and has borne this name since 2005, and Pro D2, created in 2000, which has sixteen clubs. In the top division, the regular season consists of twenty-six matches, after which the top six compete in a final phase. The winner of the final lifts the Bouclier de Brennus, designed by the engraver Charles Brennus and awarded for the first time in 1892. Stade Toulousain is the club that has won it the most times.

The clubs in the championship

The products of the clubs are categorized by club:

All the clubs are gathered on the clubs page.

Promotion, relegation and access match

The fourteenth in the Top 14 is directly relegated to Pro D2, and the winner of the Pro D2 final takes its place. The thirteenth plays an access match, a single game played on its home ground against the unfortunate finalist of Pro D2: the winner progresses to the Top 14 for the following season. In Pro D2, the top six qualify for the final phase, while the bottom two are relegated to Nationale, the third tier. This system makes the end of each season decisive, both at the top and bottom of the standings.

Match shirt, pre-match shirt or Heritage: the clubs' kits

Each club has its wardrobe centred around the home shirt, in historical colours, and the away shirt. The pre-match shirt, worn during warm-ups, features bolder designs and appeals to fans who already have the official kit. Some clubs offer a long-sleeved Heritage shirt, inspired by past kits, or a training tank top. For the stands and everyday life, polos, hoodies, and windbreakers feature the club's crest, from Toulouse to Toulon, passing through Bayonne and Bordeaux.

Frequently asked questions

Who won the first French rugby championship?

The Racing Club de France, in 1892, against Stade Français, in a final refereed by Pierre de Coubertin. The Bouclier de Brennus has rewarded the champion since that very first edition.

Where is the Top 14 final held?

Most often at the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis. The League has occasionally moved it, such as to Camp Nou in Barcelona in 2016 or to the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille in 2024.

Do the clubs in Pro D2 also have official shirts?

Yes, each professional club has its kit supplier and range of shirts and clothing. Generally, Pro D2 clubs offer a shorter range, focusing on the home shirt and some training gear.

What size should I choose for a Top 14 club shirt?

In supporter version, the fit is straight: you should take your usual size. In authentic version, which is very close-fitting, you should go up a size if you want to wear it daily rather than on the pitch.

How many teams compete in the Top 14 final phase?

Six. The four teams ranked from third to sixth place compete in play-offs, and then the two winners join the two top teams in the semi-finals, before the final.
