The rugby school kit.

Shirt, shorts, tights: the complete kit for a young player

A rugby training kit consists of a durable shirt, sturdy shorts, and high socks, complemented in winter by a pair of joggers. For the top, the Gilbert Xact Striped, with wide horizontal stripes, and the Force XV Victoire are designed to withstand tackles and collar grabs. For the bottom, the Errea Brest and the adidas Rugby three-stripe shorts rely on thick fabric and an elasticated drawstring waist that stays in place even when the ball carrier is being held. The tights Erima Wings fit under the shorts to support the thighs and reduce friction.

The ranges

Club and national shirts in the colours of their idols

Many children want to wear their favourite club's shirt to training. The selection includes those from Stade Toulousain, Union Bordeaux-Bègles, Stade Rochelais, Stade Français, RC Toulon, or Castres Olympique, as well as the shirts of the French XV and the All Blacks. These supporter versions have a looser fit and less reinforced finishing than training shirts: they're willingly worn during warm-ups, at the stadium, or daily, but a training shirt with a reinforced collar is preferable for tackling drills. A club shirt also makes a lovely gift for a first licence.

Children's sizes in centimetres and washing muddy kits

Children's teamwear is labelled according to height, as set by the European standard EN 13402: a size 128 corresponds to a child of 128 centimetres, roughly eight years old, and a size 152 to about twelve years. The child is measured barefoot and a few centimetres of ease are kept for a year of growth. After a session in the rain, let the mud dry before brushing it off, then prewash in cold water, as hot water sets the dirt in the fibres. Wash at thirty degrees, inside out, without fabric softener, which prevents technical fabrics from wicking moisture away.

Frequently asked questions

What does teamwear mean in rugby?

The English term refers to team kits: shirts, shorts, tracksuits, and accessories ordered by clubs in the same range. For a child, it mainly represents the training outfit, designed to last longer than a supporter garment.

How can a club kit out an entire category of young players?

By choosing a range available from the smallest to the largest size, like Force XV Victoire, so that both the youngest and oldest wear the same colours. A few sizes should be kept in advance for players who join mid-year.

Are tights under shorts useful for a child?

Yes, especially in winter and for kids who run a lot: tights support the thigh muscles, retain warmth, and prevent chafing. They should be fitted without being tight, and barely visible below the shorts.

How many kits should be planned for two training sessions a week?

Two complete kits allow one to be washed while the other is in use, especially in winter when drying takes time. With two shirts, two shorts, and three pairs of socks, most weeks are covered.

Do club shirts fit the same as training shirts?

Not always: supporter versions of clubs are often looser, while some training shirts have a more fitted cut. It's best to compare the child's stature with each brand's size guide rather than using the size of another shirt.
