Our rower page helps you choose a home rowing machine for fitness training, covering the available models: air resistance, water resistance, or magnetic, rail length, footprint, and folding. You will also find the technique of the stroke and workout suggestions tailored for rugby, from short intervals for forwards to longer recovery sessions.
The whole body, with every stroke.
Every stroke engages almost the entire muscle chain: the legs provide the bulk of the push, the core muscles transfer the force, and the arms finish the pull. This whole-body work, with no ground impact, quickly elevates the heart rate while strengthening the back and shoulders. Rugby coaches appreciate it for the forwards, who are heavy and prone to joint pain, and to help a player maintain their stamina when they can't run yet after an injury. Covering a fixed distance as fast as possible is also used as a fitness test.
Cardio also comes in:
All the cardio equipment can be found on the cardio page.
The movement is broken down into four phases. At the catch, with knees bent and arms extended, the torso is slightly leaned forward. The propulsion begins with the push of the legs, then the torso tilts back and the arms pull the handle down towards the ribs. At the release, the arms are relaxed, then the torso, before bending the knees to return. The recovery takes about twice as long as the propulsion: this rhythm protects the back and makes each stroke more effective. Keep your back straight and shoulders low throughout the movement.
The air rower slows down thanks to a turbine: the harder you pull, the more resistance increases, making it perfect for intense interval training, albeit with a noticeable sound. Its vent adjustments change the feel of the glide, not the intensity, which depends on your stroke; a medium setting is often sufficient. The water rower, with its blades in a tank, offers progressive resistance and a sound similar to rowing. The magnetic rower, set by levels, is the quietest, ideal for apartments. Finally, check the rail length if you are over one metre ninety.
Great deals can be found in good plans, promotions, clearance, sales, and Black Friday. The new arrivals showcase the latest collections, and items shipped within 24h are prepared and dispatched in 24 hours. The seasonal highlights follow a regular order: Black Friday in late autumn, the end-of-year holidays, the winter sales, the French Days in spring, then the summer sales and back-to-school season.
A magnetic rower, which is quiet and adjustable by levels, reassures beginners and can be forgotten by neighbours. Check the rail length, the seat height if you find it difficult to sit low, and the ability to lift it for storage.
Yes, by engaging the legs, core, and arms, it significantly increases energy expenditure during each session. Combined with a balanced diet and practiced several times a week, it helps slim the silhouette and improve stamina.
It tones the thighs, glutes, back, and shoulders, focusing more on endurance than on bulk. To gain mass, a rugby player combines it with heavy weight training.
Exhale during the propulsion, at the moment of effort, and inhale during the recovery forward. At a high cadence, some practitioners take two breaths per stroke; the important thing is to never hold your breath.
Foldable models are suitable for regular moderate-intensity use and can be stored upright against a wall. For very intense interval sessions or heavy users, check the maximum weight capacity and the rigidity of the rail.
