Our semi-recumbent bike page features bikes with a backrest, where you pedal sitting low, legs extended forward, with your back supported. It is aimed at players returning after lower back pain, former players, and trainers who want to gently maintain their fitness, with our guidelines for choosing the seat, access, and adjustments.
Gentle fitness, with back support.
On a semi-recumbent bike, you sit on a wide seat, similar to a bucket seat, with your back against a backrest, and you push on a pedal system located in front of you rather than under your pelvis. Your body weight is distributed over a larger area instead of being concentrated on a narrow saddle, which prevents sitting pain and relieves the lower back. Your hands can stay free or rest on side handles. This position, inspired by recumbent bikes, allows for long sessions without postural fatigue and makes the machine accessible to everyone, including heavier individuals.
Cardio also comes in various forms:
All cardio equipment can be found on the cardio page.
Rugby puts repeated strain on the back during scrums, rucks, and every tackle taken. After a lower back pain or herniated disc, many players struggle with the bent position of a classic bike: the semi-recumbent bike allows them to return to cardiovascular work with back support. It is also useful after knee or hip surgery, as the low step-over of the frame avoids having to lift the leg to get on. As always in rehabilitation, the volume and resistance are set with the physiotherapist or doctor, and progression is made in stages rather than in jerks.
The seat adjustment is done on a rail: you move it forward or backward so that your leg is almost fully extended when the pedal is at its furthest, without the pelvis sliding. An adjustable backrest and a padded seat, ventilated with mesh, improve comfort for sessions longer than half an hour. You check the maximum user weight indicated by the manufacturer, as well as the overall length of the machine, which is bulkier than an upright bike. The strapped pedals secure the foot, which is important in this position where the leg pushes forward rather than downward.

It maintains endurance and strengthens thighs, glutes, and calves, with very little strain on the back and joints. The comfort of the seat encourages long and regular sessions, which matters more than intensity for progress.
It helps burn energy during long sessions, thereby reducing body fat overall. No exercise targets belly fat specifically: consistency and diet make up the majority of the results.
Not much, as the backrest supports the torso throughout the effort. The work mainly focuses on the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes; for the abdominal core, additional core exercises are recommended alongside bike sessions.
The semi-recumbent prioritises comfort and back support, making it ideal for restarts and long sessions. The upright bike, being more compact, requires more core stability and allows standing on the pedals for intense efforts.
The semi-recumbent, seated and supported, is generally better tolerated during a flare-up or a restart. The elliptical, standing, engages the trunk muscles more: it takes over when the back can once again handle prolonged standing.
