From Super 12 to Super Rugby Pacific

The Super Rugby was born in 1996 under the name of Super 12, with twelve teams from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, and the Auckland Blues won the first two editions. The competition expanded to fourteen teams in 2006, then to fifteen in 2011, and opened up to Argentina and Japan with the Jaguares and the Sunwolves. After the departure of the South African franchises to Europe, it became the Super Rugby Pacific in 2022, with the addition of the Fijian Drua, based in Fiji, and Moana Pasifika, a team from Auckland representing the Samoan and Tongan communities.

Crusaders, Blues, Hurricanes: the franchises that made history

The Crusaders from Christchurch are by far the most successful franchise, enjoying an almost uninterrupted dominance from 2017 to 2023 under the leadership of Scott Robertson, who later became the coach of the All Blacks. The Blues from Auckland, crowned in 1996, 1997, and 2003, reclaimed the title in 2024 after a twenty-one-year wait. The Hamilton Chiefs won in 2012 and 2013, the Dunedin Highlanders in 2015, and the Hurricanes from Wellington in 2016. On the Australian side, the Canberra Brumbies, Brisbane Reds, and Sydney Waratahs have each put their name on the honours list, and the Pretoria Bulls won three times before the departure of the South Africans.

Franchise Jerseys: Australian Cuts and Sizes

The jerseys of the Southern franchises often adopt a fitted cut, similar to the jerseys worn on the field, made from a lightweight fabric designed for the Australian summer, since the competition runs from February to June. For a comfortable fit in the stands or for everyday wear, it's best to go one size up from your usual size. Australian and New Zealand sizing mirrors European S, M, L sizes for adults, but children's sizes are often listed by even ages, from eight to sixteen years. For care, a cold wash, inside out and without fabric softener, preserves the technical fabric and the logos of the partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sister competition that brings together franchises from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and the United States. Peñarol from Montevideo won it in 2022 and 2023, in front of an ever-growing crowd.

Why did the South Africans leave Super Rugby?

After the interruption in 2020, the South African federation chose to join the Pro14, which became the United Rugby Championship in 2021. It offers time zones closer to Europe and significantly shorter travel distances.

When does the Southern franchises' competition take place during the year?

The competition runs from late February to June, during the Australian summer and autumn, before the international test window in July. From France, the matches take place on Fridays and Saturdays, often early in the morning.

What is Super Rugby Aotearoa?

A championship reserved for the five New Zealand franchises, organised in 2020 and 2021 when the pandemic closed the borders. The Crusaders won it both times, filling the stadiums across the country.
