The English elite, at a reduced price.

From the Courage League to the Premiership: an elite born in 1987

The English championship was established in 1987 under the name of Courage League, named after its brewmate partner, featuring twelve clubs that only met once a year, without a fixed schedule. Home and away matches only appeared in the mid-1990s, and professionalism, allowed in 1995, transformed the competition. The play-offs, introduced in 2003, have since determined the champion in a final at Twickenham, the English Rugby Union's stadium in south-west London. The elite underwent a severe crisis in 2022 and 2023, when Worcester, Wasps and London Irish disappeared for financial reasons, reducing the championship to ten clubs.

Leicester, Bath, Saracens: clubs that have made their mark on England

The Leicester Tigers hold the record for the most English championship titles, ahead of Bath, who were untouchable at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, then re-crowned in 2025 against Leicester. The Saracens, based north of London, dominated the 2010s and won the Champions Cup in 2016, 2017, and 2019. Exeter, who joined the elite in 2010, achieved the double of championship and European Cup in 2020. Northampton, European winners in 2000, and the Harlequins, champions in 2012 and 2021, complete this list, along with Sale, who were crowned in 2006.

English jerseys: fitted cut and size choice

English club kits often have an athletic cut, tailored to the chest and arms, derived from match jerseys: a supporter wanting to wear the shirt over a t-shirt, or simply for comfort, should go up a size. British size guides often indicate chest measurement in inches: one inch equals 2.54 centimetres, making it easy to convert measurements. For children, the size charts are read by age group, to compare with the child's actual size. Finally, a thirty-degree wash, inside out, preserves the printed sponsors on the front and back.

Frequently asked questions

How many clubs are in the Premiership?

Ten clubs: Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Gloucester, Harlequins, Leicester, Newcastle, Northampton, Sale and the Saracens. The tight format allows for home and away matches between all clubs before the play-offs.

Why were the Saracens relegated?

In 2020, the club was relegated to the second division for repeatedly exceeding the salary cap of the championship. They bounced back the following season and regained the champion title in 2023.

What is the Premiership Rugby Cup?

A cup contested alongside the championship, allowing clubs to field young players during international periods. It succeeded the former Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Which English clubs have won the European Cup?

Bath in 1998, followed by Northampton, Leicester, Wasps, Saracens and Exeter, who have all claimed the most prestigious of European cups. Leicester was the first club to retain their title, in 2001 and 2002.

When does the English rugby championship take place?

It generally begins in September and ends in June. It continues during the Six Nations Championship and autumn tests, meaning that clubs then play without their English, Scottish or Welsh internationals.
