The classic from Puma since 1968.

The King, a legend since 1968

Launched in 1968, the King is the founding model of Puma's reputation in studded footwear. Pelé wore it during the 1970 World Cup, and it has accompanied several generations of players who are fond of a simple, flexible and comfortable shoe. For decades, its upper was made from kangaroo leather. In March 2023, Puma replaced this material with K-BETTER, a synthetic without animal origin, which mimics the flexibility of kangaroo while offering better water resistance. In rugby, the King appeals to kickers and backs who want to feel the ball without sacrificing comfort.

Ultimate, Pro, Match, Top: the versions of the King

The King Ultimate is the most advanced version: K-BETTER upper, lightweight sole, external heel counter, and conical studs to aid pivots. The King Pro maintains the same philosophy in a slightly simpler construction. The King Match targets the regular player looking for a robust pair for training and matches. The King Top, true to the traditional design with its long tongue, appeals to those who appreciate the classic look of the model. All of them retain what defines the King: a comfortable fit from the very first session and a soft touch, sought after by kickers.

SG, FG/AG or Turf: choosing your King sole

The King is available with three types of sole. The SG, with screw-in studs, is most useful for winter rugby: it grips in thick grass and secures the kicker's footing when striking. The FG/AG, with moulded studs, is suitable for dry grass and synthetic pitches, for training and early season matches. The Turf version, with rubber studs, serves on hard surfaces and older synthetics. For maintenance, the synthetic upper can be cleaned with a damp sponge and dried at room temperature, with newspaper inside; check the tightness of the screw-in studs before each match.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Puma King suitable for rugby?

Yes, for a back or a kicker, especially with the SG sole with screw-in studs for muddy pitches in winter. Its flexible upper provides a precise touch, but it does not offer the enhanced support sought by forwards.

Is the Puma King still made of kangaroo leather?

No, Puma replaced kangaroo leather in 2023 with K-BETTER, a synthetic material without animal origins. It replicates the softness of leather, is more water-resistant and requires less maintenance.

Who made the Puma King famous?

Pelé wore it during the 1970 World Cup, which brought it international fame. Since 1968, it has remained the reference shoe for players who prioritize comfort and touch.

Does the Puma King run large?

It fits quite true to size, with a comfortable volume at the front of the foot. Stick to your usual size, tried on at the end of the day with the match sock, leaving half a centimetre in front of the toes.

What does Turf or TT mean on a Puma King?

These versions feature numerous small rubber studs instead of cleats. They are suitable for hard surfaces, stabilised pitches and older synthetic surfaces with short piles, but not for wet natural grass.
