The United Rugby Championship descends from the Celtic League, launched in 2001 between teams from Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. Italian clubs joined in 2010, before it became known as the Pro12, then two South African franchises arrived in 2017, during the Pro14. In 2021, the entry of the Bulls, Lions, Sharks, and Stormers gave birth to the URC, a championship with sixteen teams spread across two hemispheres, where trips to South Africa are now part of the regular schedule.

The four Irish provinces each wear their historical colour: blue for Leinster, the most successful team in the championship, red for Munster, white for Ulster, and green for Connacht. In Wales, the Ospreys play in black, Cardiff in sky blue and black, and the Scarlets in red. Glasgow Warriors, Edinburgh, Benetton Treviso, and Zebre Parma complete the European picture, facing the Pretoria Bulls in blue and the Stormers from Cape Town.
The jerseys of the Irish, Welsh, and Scottish provinces follow a British fit, noticeably more fitted than a French cut: the larger size avoids a jersey that pulls at the shoulders. The South African franchises adopt similar cuts. Before ordering, measure the chest width of a regularly worn jersey laid flat, then compare it to the brand's size guide. The authentic versions, very snug, are reserved for those seeking the exact look of the players, with thinner and more stretchy fabric.
