Casual elegance.
The fabric defines the character of a shirt. The Oxford, with its slightly marled basket weave, is thick and durable: it's found on the Fred Perry Oxford shirt and the Blend Sun Oxford long-sleeve shirt. The poplin, on the other hand, is tightly woven and smooth, with a cool touch; the Michael Kors shirt pairs it with a stretchy fibre and a slim cut for a sharp look. The flannel from Colorful Standard, in brushed organic cotton, offers a fluffy feel that keeps you warm. Lastly, the voile, almost transparent, gives its lightness to the women's model from COMMA with patch pockets.

The button-down collar originated on English polo fields, where players secured the points of their collars to prevent them from flapping in the wind; a New York shirtmaker adopted it in 1896 and paired it with Oxford fabric, a duo that has become a classic. The overshirt, like the one from Project X Paris, is made from a thicker canvas: it is worn open, like a light jacket. Women's shirts play on different styles, with embroidered or textured details from Project X Paris, faux leather material from Sixth June, while the short sleeves of the Kariban Aces are suitable for warm days.
The size of a shirt is primarily indicated by the neck size, measured at the base of the neck with a finger's ease: generally count 37 or 38 centimetres for an S, 39 or 40 for an M, and 41 or 42 for an L. Next is the shoulder width, where the seam should sit right on the bone, and the sleeve length, which should stop at the base of the thumb. The slim fit follows the chest, while the straight fit allows for more ease. When washing, unbutton the shirt completely, including collar and cuffs, wash it at thirty degrees and hang it still damp on a hanger: ironing will be much quicker.

A plain poplin shirt, white or sky blue, with a classic or Italian collar, remains the safest choice. Its smooth and tight weave is easy to iron and pairs well with both a tie and an open collar.
It is mainly suitable from autumn to spring: its brushed cotton traps air and keeps you warm. In warmer weather, linen, voile or a short-sleeved shirt in lightweight cotton are much more comfortable.
An untreated cotton can lose a bit of length in the first washes, especially at high temperatures or in the tumble dryer. Washing at thirty degrees and air drying on a hanger significantly reduces this shrinkage.
Opt for soft cotton, easy-to-handle buttons and a cut that allows for shoulder movement. Sizes are shown by age, but it's best to rely on the child's actual stature rather than their age.
It's a collar with very widely spaced points, which exposes the neck and opens nicely without a tie. It gives a more modern look than the classic collar, which has points that drop further towards the chest.
