The colours of the nations, from the Tournament to the World Cup.

Home, away, long sleeves: the variations of a jersey

Each team has a home jersey in its historical colour, and an away jersey, worn when the colours of the two teams would clash, for example when two nations dressed in blue meet. Some also add a long sleeve version, like South Africa, a nod to pre-professionalism kits that are popular in winter. The federations also offer training jerseys, which are simpler, and sometimes commemorative editions, like those that celebrated one hundred and fifty years of Ireland or one hundred and twenty years of the Crunch.

Rooster, fern, protea, thistle: the emblems of the nations

Each national jersey sports an emblem full of history. The rooster of the French XV emerged in the early 1910s, the silver fern has adorned the black of the All Blacks since 1893, and the red rose has accompanied England's white since the first match in 1871. The Springboks wear the protea on the left chest and the antelope on the right, Scotland has the thistle, Wales the feathers of the Prince of Wales, and Italy the crest of its federation on azure blue inherited from the House of Savoy. These symbols, more than the colour, allow one to date a jersey and recognise its origin at a first glance.

Supporter, authentic or performance: three cuts, three uses

The supporter version is regular fit, made of thicker and softer fabric: it’s the one worn in the stands, at a match or in everyday life. The authentic version, termed performance by some brands, takes on the player’s fitted cut, with stretchy fabric that limits grabs in tackles and wicks away sweat. It is taken one size larger for off-pitch use. The women’s cuts, like that of the Black Ferns' jersey, are tailored at the waist, and children's jerseys reflect the designs of adult models in sizes by age.
