Vests, cones and tactical board: organising a session

An effective session is prepared with minimal but the right equipment. The reversible vests, like the yellow and orange PowerShot models, form two teams when turned inside out, saving time between workshops. The marking cones Gilbert mark out passing lanes, tackling areas, and running distances. The tactical board Gilbert, which is erasable, is used to draw a line-out or a set play before repeating it on the field. The Reflex Trainer, a ball with an unpredictable bounce, sharpens reflexes and ball handling.

Corner posts, tee and whistle for match day

The rules of the game require fourteen flag posts of at least 1.20 metres: eight at the corners of both goals, six aligned on the halfway line and the twenty-two metre lines, two metres outside the touchlines. The Tremblay models, with integrated joints, bend on contact to avoid injuring a player who is thrown into touch. The tee Tremblay holds the ball for conversion attempts and penalties taken from the ground. The whistle without a ball, designed by Canadian referee Ron Foxcroft and launched in 1987, remains audible in the rain because nothing can get stuck in it.

Compliance studs and balance work

World Rugby's Regulation 12 requires studs to be no more than twenty-one millimetres, without any burrs or sharp edges. The Precision Union Studs and Uhlsport aluminium studs, sold by the hundred, allow for the replacement of worn ones before they become sharp. The balance board Gibbon and the balance foam Sporti are used for proprioception work: just a few minutes per session, supporting on one leg and then with eyes closed, strengthen the ankles and reduce the risk of sprains, especially in players who have previously sustained one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cones should I set up for a session?

About twenty cones are enough to mark out three or four workshops at the same time. Two different colours help children identify starts and finishes, and a cone holder prevents leaving any behind on the field.

Why use reversible vests?

A single vest offers two colours: simply turn it inside out to change sides or recompose the teams. You only need one set, one vest per player, which is quicker to store than a double stock of colours.

How to care for vests?

Wash at thirty degrees, inside out and without fabric softener, which hinders moisture wicking. Air dry and avoid the tumble dryer, which eventually distorts lightweight mesh.

How to change a screw-in stud?

Unscrew the worn stud with the appropriate tool, clean the thread, then screw in the new one by hand before tightening with the tool, without forcing. Check all studs before each match: a damaged stud can injure an opponent.

Is a tee allowed for kick-offs?

No, in fifteen-a-side rugby, kick-offs and restarts from the twenty-two metre line are taken as a drop kick. The tee is used for placed kicks, conversions, and penalties attempted between the posts.
